On the evening of Monday, December 8, 1980John Lennon
"left work" at The Record Plant recording studio in New York City. He was on his way home to say goodnight to his 5 year old son. By 10:50 pm, his car pulled up to the arched front door of his home, the iconic Dakota building, in the city he loved: New York. He stepped out of his car, and elected to walk in his own front door, through the building's foyer on 1 West 72nd Street.
A quiet man stepped quietly out of the shadows of the building, and spoke only 4 words: "Excuse me, Mr. Lennon ?" before proceeding to discharge his .38 caliber Charter Arms Special Undercover handgun 4 times into the body of John Lennon. Upon completion, the quiet man resumed quietly reading the book he held in his hand: J.D.Salinger's "The Catcher in the Rye," while his bloodied victim staggered up five steps of his own home before collapsing.
On the evening of Monday, December 8, 1980 at 11:07 pm, the emergency room of nearby Roosevelt Hospital pronounced John Winston Ono Lennon "dead on arrival." By 11:30 that evening, the event saturated the news industry: John Winston Ono Lennon "expired" (as one NYC newscaster put it). It next saturated our consciousness - triggering an outpouring of grief around the world on an unprecedented scale.
Between December 9, 1980 and throughout 1981 newspapers, magazines and media scrambled to not only report, but to put some meaning & perspective on that grief, helping us understand why it touched all of us so deeply & profoundly.
These 4 newspapers capture the "ripple effect" of that history, as it reverberated throughout the year that followed.
The
NY Daily News
started the year with a
"Lennon Family Album"
and ended it with an
Exclusive Interview
with Yoko & Sean, almost one year after the murder.
