First Congregational Yarmouth Port MA Clear Pairpoint Glass Cup Plate #16
Comes with its original box. Please note that this original box is quite old and either age-yellowed and/or stained and/or contains writing.
This plate, and many others, came from the estate of an antiques dealer and collector. Most of the plates still had their Pairpoint sticker with them in the box, as does this one. Almost all of the stickers have dried up and no longer stick to the plates, but are loose in the boxes, but this one is actually still stuck to the plate.
This round commemorative lead crystal plate is about 3-1/2" in diameter. It is clear and colorless, and features an image of the Fist Congregational Church of Yarmouth Port, MA. The antique dealer and collector who owned the collection this comes from, labeled this as being #16 in the series of plate designs.
Most of the plate designs in the series were commissioned by museums, historical organizations, charities, churches, etc.
Pairpoint lead crystal cup plates are unique works of art glass. They are hand crafted in the older traditional ways, with the artisan working with hammer and chisel to create the steel molds used for each design. Then, the molten glass for each plate is hand pressed into the mold, using an antique press. This hand process creates a series of objects that are alike, but not identical. None of them are perfection (you will see tiny bubbles, lovely little swirls of color, etc) - but they are all beautiful. When you look at the photos with the zoom feature, remember that any little flaws you see are probably not noticeable to the naked eye. If you look closely, you can see that each plate has the artisan's signature included in the design.
What is a cup plate? What was its original use? Well, in the 19th century, tea was customarily served in cups without handles. The hot tea was poured into a deep saucer to cool, and then the cup was put to rest on a dainty cup plate to avoid soiling the linen or polished wood. Users would drink the cooled tea from the saucer, not the cup.
Cup plates can be used in a variety of ways, such as soap dishes, butter pat dishes, sun catchers on window sills (the crystal plates are beautiful in sun light!), holders for used tea bags or spoons, coasters, trinket dishes, or even hostess gifts.
