    Description

    Welcome to
    Antiques & Moore!
This listing is for a RARE Mt. Washington CROWN MILANO Art Glass marmalade jar with starfish design, c. 1890's.
The vase has a round lower body with inward curve at the opening, a hobnail textured exterior with a matte/satin finish and is decorated with a burnished starfish design with jeweled embellishment. The starfish are decorated with multi-colored glass beads called "jewels" with salmon/peach colored stylized flowers in the background on a custard glass body. The custard glass exterior has a satin finish while the interior has a glossy finish. The collar, bail and lid were originally silver plated although the silver has naturally aged tarnished patina. Inside of lid is marked "M W". There is a double twisted bail handle with a ball in the center top. The lid has an embossed floral design.
Originally called "Albertine", the patent for this Art Glass was issued in 1893.  The name was later changed in the Mt. Washington factory records to "Crown Milano". The early examples of this glass were not signed and originally had a paper label. The metal fittings were often stamped either "M W" for Mt. Washington or with the Pairpoint trademark stamp. This wonderful example of Crown Milano at its best is pictured on page 89 of the book "Mt. Washington Art Glass" by Betty B. Sisk. The author gives this piece a value of 00.00-00.00 at the time of issue in 2003.
Measures 6" high (to top of bail when upright), 3" high (to top of base), 5 1/2" at widest with a 3 3/4" diameter mouth. Weighs 1.5 pounds.
This great marmalade jar is in excellent Estate condition with the only noted flaws being two missing jewels on the outward extensions of the starfish that are very hard to notice. The glass is in excellent condition with no signs of wear. The silver plated collar, bail and lid have a mellow, naturally tarnished appearance which gives the piece its true antique appearance.
