19th Century New England Glass Company 1883 Amberina Trumpet Lily Vase 8”. High Lead Crystal. The most beautiful ring I’ve ever heard!
The New England Glass Company was the first company to perfect the glass blowing technique ending up with the gorgeous coloration fading from deep mahogany red to light golden amber, thus calling it Amberina. Read more below. Mt. Washington perfected another technique of same color combination soon thereafter but was forced by lawsuit to change name to Rose Amber Glass.
There is one other of these vases listed for near 0 on eBay but is listed by wrong manufacturer and provenance.
Condition is "Previously owned” near mint.
All the bubbles from the original hand blowing process can be seen with original pontil mark giving its beauty an extra dimension. No chips, cracks or repairs. One tiny flea bite on edge of foot and some scratches on the bottom which I’ve shown in my very high resolution pictures. Any wear is commiserate with its 19th century age. Beautiful piece for display
This item will be super packed and double boxed with insurance for a stress free delivery. Handling charges have been applied. Shipped with care via FedEx.
The New England Glass Company made a large variety of glassware, from pocket bottles and tumblers to art glass, using a range of techniques including molding, mechanical pressing, cutting, and engraving. It produced some of the finest blown glass in the United States, competitive with European examples. The glass had a high lead content, simple outlines, and was carefully finished. The firm was also famous for its rich colors, especially ruby red and the amberina range, a blended colored glass in which the lower part, a yellowish amber, merges into a ruby-red color higher up, as exemplified in this vase. An example of American technological innovation, the amberina technique was patented by the New England Glass Company in 1883. The base metal was an amber glass containing some gold, and the tinges were developed by applied reheating. The glass was sometimes blown in molds, although this example appears to be hand-blown. Others of this piece are on display in art galleries. New England Glass Company was eventually taken over by its general manager William L Libbey and eventually became Libbey Glass.
